Today, October 29, 2026, marks two years since the DANA storm that devastated the province of Valencia. That day, torrential rain caused floods that killed more than 230 people.
The figures
Sources give 233 dead, although some say 232. In addition, two people are still officially missing.
A DANA (isolated upper-level low) is a pocket of cold air high in the atmosphere that can unleash very heavy rain in just a few hours.
A day of mourning
The Valencian government declared October 29 a day of remembrance. Valencia City Council flew flags at half-mast all day and will hold a minute of silence at the entrance of all its buildings.
The Association of Victims of the DANA organized tributes in Alaquàs, Paiporta and Valencia. The Paiporta event was moved to November 5, and on Saturday October 31 there will be a march in the capital.
What the families are asking for
"There is still a lot to do and to rebuild", said Elizabeth González, the association's vice president. Many families still blame former Valencian president Carlos Mazón for how that day was handled.
Valencian public television, À Punt, is airing a documentary with victims' testimonies.
A very hard week
The anniversary comes in a week of national mourning for the [Toledo train crash](tren-toledo.html), which has left at least 68 dead. And with new rain: the DANA Adam has caused floods and evacuations in La Safor and La Marina Alta.
