The United States is on track to break a record. As of October 27, 2026, more than 33 million people had already voted early in the midterm elections, according to NBC News.
The figures
That's about 18.5% more than at the same point in 2022, the previous election of this kind. Early voting is up in 34 of the 47 states that publish their figures.
More than 33 million people voted early before October 28, 18.5% more than in 2022.
Some examples:
Texas: about 4.5 million people have already voted, over 700,000 more than in 2022, with Republicans and Democrats in similar proportions.
Kansas: more than 200,000 votes, 22% more than four years ago.
Harris County (Houston): recorded about 104,000 votes, a record for an election of this kind.
What's on the ballot
The election is on Tuesday, November 3. It's called a midterm because it falls halfway through the president's term. All 435 seats in the House of Representatives and a third of the Senate are up, as well as many governors and local offices.
Why it matters
Whoever controls Congress decides which laws pass over the next two years. If Democrats win one of the two chambers, it will be much harder for President Donald Trump to pass his plans. If Republicans keep both, he'll have a free hand.
One of the issues weighing most this year is inflation: prices are still rising faster than normal.
How to vote early
It depends on each state: in many you can vote in person at designated centers or by mail. The safest way to find out how, where and until when is the official website vote.gov, which has information for every state.
