News published on October 28, 2026. The situation may have changed since then.

One day after the clash between Cuba and the United States at the UN, the tension has moved to Havana. The US Embassy has warned that it expects a demonstration outside its building this Wednesday, October 28, 2026, in the afternoon.

Where and when

The rally is planned for the open plaza in front of the embassy, on the Malecón: the José Martí Anti-Imperialist Tribune. It is the place the Cuban government has used for years for its events against the United States.

The embassy's alert doesn't say what time it starts or who called it. But Cuban media link it to what happened in New York: the UN embargo vote and the expulsion of a Cuban diplomat ordered by Marco Rubio. We cover that [in this story](onu-cuba-embargo.html).

What the embassy has done

It closed in-person services for US citizens from 11:00 a.m., and warns there will be more police, detours and closed streets near the building.

It asks its citizens to avoid demonstrations and crowds, keep a low profile and follow local news.

The US Embassy closed its public services at 11:00 a.m. because of the demonstration expected outside its building.

Not the first time

Something similar happened in May 2026. After criminal charges were filed in Miami against Raúl Castro, the government gathered soldiers, police officers and state workers on the same plaza. According to an internal document published at the time, Havana's Electric Company ordered 971 workers to be brought there, with transport starting at 5 a.m.

That is why many Cubans doubt these rallies are spontaneous.

If you are in Havana

The safest thing is to stay away from the Malecón near the embassy while the event lasts. Americans who need help can call the embassy at +53 7 839 4100.
